Skills You Need To Become A Successful Freelance Journalist

Freelance writers have the option to branch out and become a freelance journalist. They are of the same job description but with some difference on how the writing is supposed to come out. A regular writer writes content according to their client's needs -- to be used for marketing or SEO, product promotion, sales and newsletters, and the likes. Journalism, however, is more based on facts -- news with in-depth facts pertaining to a specific topic.

Research:

One of the most important skills as a freelance journalist is the passion for research. For example, you might be tasked to write on current business trends in Miami or the state of the real estate market in South Florida. You need to make sure that you have enough facts to fit your topic. This means that you will be spending around 70 to 80 percent of your time doing research before putting them all together.

Expertise:

Any writer can do any articles they wish, but a freelance journalist must have more if they want it come out right. Keep in mind that a journalist's work is more of an opinion on current news -- you must be familiar with it, know what to write, and of course, keeping your readers interested by showering it with plenty of facts. Also, the topic can be written in a positive or negative air, but both require professionalism to get your point across and for your readers to believe you.

People-Friendly:

A freelance journalist has a more flexible job compared to freelance writers. Regular article writers and content writers are usually saddled with bulk projects since their articles will be used for SEO or Internet Marketing. Freelance journalists on the other hand have a lot of free time on their hands and can easily accommodate different publications if they want to.

Finding a client can be easy but you need to have excellent networking skills to entice them to hire you as their journalists. Make sure that you have a positive, professional air around you during interview. It would also help to have different sample writings -- both positive and negative news so they can determine your skills for the job. Also, it is also a good idea to beef up your online popularity with networking to get more people to know you and your expertise as a freelance journalist.
